I have made salads with thirty ingredients and I have made salads with four. The four-ingredient version is almost always better.
Take a head of cold butter lettuce. Tear it, do not cut it. Pat the leaves dry with a clean towel. Wet lettuce does not hold dressing.
A tablespoon of good red wine vinegar, three tablespoons of the best olive oil you have, a pinch of flaky salt, a grind of pepper. Whisk in the bowl. Toss with your hands so every leaf gets a light coat.
That is the salad. Do not add cheese, do not add nuts, do not add avocado. A great salad is about restraint. The rest is just showing off.
